I was going to post a thread on how to get another 4rwhp by modifying the stock airbox.  My first GTS had K&Ns and a modified airbox.  My Paxton car has just a cone filter.  My GTS has a Macedo custom built airbox.   If you just removed the airbox and add cones then you'll be removing the positive air pressure into the engine.  You'll also be opening up airflow above the rad lowering it's efficiency.  All bad stuff.

The factory airbox can be modified by removing the rain baffle and pop riveting a flat plate (aluminium sheet) to the top of the airbox.  As told to me by the SRT Engineers at VOI X, "With cotton air filters like the K&Ns a little rain will not hurt anything."  Hence the newer Vipers come with cotton filters and no rain baffle.  With paper air filters the rain would cause the filters to mat and ruin the filters choking the engine.

I think that  at to 630 rwhp or so the stocker works OK when modified.  Once you get to 700 the stocker airbox, the TBs and air tubes are too small and start restricting the airflow slightly.  Opening the airbox to the front of the rad helps and opening the front nose to a Roe Racing front faxcia scoop adds airflow to the airbox, increasing positive pressure to the the engine and also increasing airflow through the radiator for better cooling.  Bringing more air into the front of the car cuts down on the airflow under the car increasing the downforce and aerodynamics of the car.

Waiting for comments and other informed or expert opinions as not being an engineer this should be called an educated guess.

Cool, nice pic Ted.
I've always thought about doing this.  I will probably try it now that you reminded me.

That particular airbox had a prebuilt aluminium plate that I think the Doc paid about $115. and rivited it himself.

Looks great BAZ.  If you look at mine you can see that he put little cuts at the opening and lifted the "lid" at the opening a little - to catch more air and be closer to the hood.

Anything special about the trans?

Sorry, but my airfilter went with the car and it's gone.  The notch was to lift the leading edge for a slightly larger inlet opening (aobut 1/2").  It's notched just inside of the hold down screws and lifted.  Smoothly bent would be more professional and a few hours of work.

Just measure the top of Your airbox and cut down from there?

Sorry cant check mine at the moment because Viper is in storage while house/garage work is going on.....

Plus mine was a little shorter due to the Fluydine rad fitted...Hence no bolt down holes through the top.....

Trans is a fully built donato box.. Aston Martin 5th and 6th,bead blasted gears treated with bronze bushes and selector pads Factory is plastic....
