i ask here cause greg good is my guy for heads and head gaskets.

what are the ways a head gasket can be checked on a viper ?

i remember a coolant smell at the end of last year. no puddles but a slight smell. i sure hope its not the head gaskets. i have a bunch o things to do before i can get it up on my buddies lift to look under for any stains on the block or head. but wondering how in general it can be checked

I have a 10# Roe sc and when my headgasket started to 'seep' I could hear it and when I twisted the TB throttles manually while leaning under my hood, I could see a tiny puff of smoke or exhaust come from the driver's side of my engine.  That caused me to jack up my car where I could see lines of black from the headgasket area.

Just my experience.

Phil does your engine have copper head gaskets on it? I'm assuming it does. If so, it is possible to have some leakage, depending on how they were installed and the sealer used. I have seen pics of what looked like oil running down the side of the block after a while.

Check for water in the oil. Water will turn the oil into a milkshake looking substance.

If you don't have water in the oil but do find evidence of a small external leak it's possible to put some stop leak in the radiator. Soemthing good like KW Block-Seal.
