SRT Says No to Automatic, Entry-Level Viper…For Now

The Viper may not be selling like hot cakes, but that doesn’t mean SRT is going to water down the product to move a few more units. The $100K, manual-only Viper may seem like a lot to handle, but SRT CEO Ralph Gilles says that they aren’t going to change the formula…at least, not yet.

“We’re trying to build a custom show car that you can own. This is not a disposable device here,” Gilles told Automotive News. “We’ve never tried to be Corvette. We never will be.”

Continuing on, Gilles was confronted with the possibility of an automatic Viper to appeal to a larger audience. And while he says that they are not at work on an automatic Viper at the moment, Gilles is “open-minded to it,” but defends the current layout:

“In a way, it’s further distinguishing us because everyone has paddle shifters and we don’t. But at the same time, we’re also seeing now where people are noticing and saying, ‘Wow, it’s like the last driver’s car left.’ That’s exactly what it’s been about all along,” said Gilles.

We’ll see if SRT changes its mind in the future. What do you think — would you want to see an automatic Viper?

I'd like to see a .6 sec faster automatic Viper ...  Add a few mph to the top speeds in quarter, half and mile events with a duakl clutch or strong automatic trans.

I'd like to see the plain jane Viper sell a lot more than the expemsive GTS before I'd know if the price made any difference ...

To sell more Vipers maybe SRT does need to make a puny Hemi (or 400bhp Fiat V8 DOHC V8) for a discount Viper to make sales around a million a year like the Vette does?  People seem to still be comparing  the Viper to the vette.  Maybe SRT should make some sluggish Viper for the elcheapo vettes to be able to race?
